Our Belief
When families and community members are partners — not recipients — transformation holds.
Powerhouse Collective

Families and communities historically excluded from America's school design often carry rich generational histories of community organizing for literacy attainment and economic mobility. When families are treated as recipients of services rather than partners in shaping learning environments, trust erodes, outcomes fragment, and change doesn't hold.

Powerhouse Collective recognizes that every family and community is a collective of power — full of generational wisdom, expertise, dreams, and deep investment in children's futures. Sustained educational improvement harnesses that power to activate cohesive systems of support across school, home, and community.

Grounded in family engagement, community organizing, and literacy research, we help learning communities implement systems of engagement that strengthen teaching and learning — and support sustained, measurable impact.

The Model

The Powerhouse Engaged Literacy Levers (PELL)™

A system of collective practices for school, family, and community partnerships — grounded in engagement research and linked to measurable learning outcomes. The organizing model that drives all of Powerhouse Collective capacity-building services.

Foundation Levers
Build the culture, connection, and conditions that make transformation possible
Collective History

Shape asset-based beliefs, pedagogy, and understanding through community stories, creative expression, identities, and culture.

Collective Care

Deepen trust, a sense of belonging, and shared responsibility across families, community members, and school staff.

Collective Organizing

Mobilize the skills, experiences, abilities, and ideas of families, community members, and educators toward shared goals.

Foundation Enables Action
Elevation Levers
Translate foundation into aligned learning, leadership, and innovation
Collective Learning

Align home, school, and community strategies to shared literacy and learning goals — so children experience one seamless system of support.

Collective Leadership

Distribute leadership through the co-creation and execution of action plans tied to shared learning priorities and outcomes.

Collective Innovation

Co-create community-centered solutions and expand multiple literacies across generations, with emphasis on digital, data, and media literacies.

The PELL™ shifts educational efforts from service and compliance-based models to relational models grounded in shared leadership, distributed ownership, and evidence-based partnership strategies linked to measurable learning outcomes. When all six levers are activated within a community, children, families, and communities flourish.

What Becomes Possible

What becomes possible when families and communities are at the center of teaching and learning?

The results are transformative for everyone — children, educators, community organizations, schools and districts.
